Meet Our Providers


Vanessa M. Mayol, MD

Dr. Mayol was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. From the age of 15, she always knew she wanted to devote her career to keeping children healthy. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1986, and continued her residency at the University of Puerto Rico Children’s Hospital. Dr. Mayol moved to Maryland and worked at the National Institutes for Health for one year before going into private practice. She joined Bethesda Pediatrics in 1994. Dr. Mayol has been board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics since 1990. Her favorite part of being a pediatrician is watching her patients grow and thrive throughout the years.

Hilary Light-Deutsch, MD

Dr. Deutsch has been with Bethesda Pediatrics since she moved to the D.C. area from New York City in 1994. Dr. Deutsch was born and grew up in New York City. She received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and her medical degree from State University of New York Medical School at Brooklyn. Dr. Deutsch completed both her pediatric internship and residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Babies Hospital. Dr. Deutsch is a past president of the Montgomery County-Prince George’s Pediatric Society.  Dr. Deutsch’s special interests include asthma and nutrition.  Dr. Deutsch lives in Bethesda with her family and enjoys playing basketball, cooking, and traveling.

Monika M. Walters, MD

Dr. Monika Walters joined the practice in 1995 after completing her pediatric residency at Georgetown University. She attended Drew University in Madison, NJ for undergraduate work in psychobiology and received her medical degree from Albany Medical College in NY. She was named to Washingtonian magazine’s Top Doctors, received the Pediatric Community Service award from Georgetown for her volunteer work on the Kids Mobile Van that serves the underprivileged in DC, and also received the Barker Foundation’s (a local adoption agency) Staff Appreciation Award.  Dr. Walters is a Barker adoptive parent to a son born in South Korea. She has spoken numerous times for Barker and reviews medical referrals for adoptive families from children around the world. In her spare time she enjoys “old lady” soccer, reading, gardening, and goofing off with her son.

Carl F. Gatto, MD

Dr. Gatto is a native of New Jersey. He completed his undergraduate training at Boston College and received his B.S. degree in Biology in 1989. He attended Tufts University School of Medicine and received his M.D. degree in 1994 before moving to Washington, DC. He completed both his pediatric internship and residency at Georgetown University Hospital from 1994-1997. Dr. Gatto worked at another local pediatric practice for several years before joining Bethesda Pediatrics in September 2000. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, and has been named to Washingtonian magazine’s Top Doctors list. His focus is on patient and parent education as well as preventive health care.  Dr. Gatto lives in Washington, DC with his partner (who is also a pediatrician) and son. He currently works part-time and spends his days off caring for his son. He is an avid cook and baker and enjoys photography and running.

Amy L. Hapip, MD

Dr. Hapip is a board certified, locally trained pediatrician who joined us in June, 2018. She is a “Triple Hoya,” having completed her undergraduate degree in biochemistry, medical school, and residency all at Georgetown University. In residency, she received the Hugh Hussey award and String of Pearls award for recognition in medical student teaching and mentorship. Dr. Hapip believes in inclusive, comprehensive healthcare and emphasizes making visits fun and enjoyable while fitting in teaching moments.  Dr. Hapip lives in North Potomac with her husband, four crazy rescue dogs, and fluffy bunny.
